Selling Your Stuff With Less Stress!

We have noticed that many of our clients are requesting help selling items so that they can have more organization and free up space in their homes. The best way to get organized is to get rid of stuff you are not using, and if you can make a few extra dollars selling your stuff, great! But let’s admit it, Selling Your Stuff can be more of a hassle than it is worth. Use this guide to help save yourself some valuable time and energy, but best practice is to always call ahead if you are not sure what items are bought. It is better to do your homework from home rather than lug things all over town only to find they are not accepted when you arrive in person.

There’s nothing quite as fulfilling as purging your house of unwanted stuff. Maybe your “a-ha” moment came when you stepped into your basement or garage, looked around, and thought to yourself, “How on earth did we accumulate this much stuff?” Or one snow day you were clearing off your car while looking at your vehicle-free garage and thought, “Maybe I could make some money and room for my car if I sell this or that.” If this is you, you are not alone. According to a 2015 survey by Gladiator® GarageWorks almost 1 in 4 Americans say their garage is too cluttered to fit their car.

Whenever you came to the realization that you wanted to get rid of your unwanted things, the next question that immediately followed was likely, “How do I do it?” In this blog, we are going to share with you some great places here in the Lehigh Valley where you can sell your used items that will help you declutter and earn a few bucks at the same time.

Selling Your Stuff With The Big Names

In any article about selling things, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the obvious online locations that even your tech-phobic family and friends have heard of. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the well-known national entities for selling used items:

While these sites will help you sell your stuff virtually, they do have differences that you should know about. For example, sites like eBay, Etsy, and others take fees from anything you sell (such as listing fees, transaction fees, posting fees, and more). Also, Nextdoor, Facebook Groups, Craigslist, and eBay allow you to shop in your hometown area – the link provided above for Craigslist will take you to the Lehigh Valley sale site – which means that you as the seller can target your locale for potential buyers, if you choose. Finally, Facebook Groups, Nextdoor, and Craigslist let you post items for sale as well as items you wish to give away for free. Sometimes, the end goal isn’t making money but just getting items out of your house.

Selling Your Stuff Locally in the Lehigh Valley

You can certainly take advantage of selling your unwanted, used items through the aforementioned websites. Thankfully, you also have the option of utilizing a number of Lehigh Valley-based organizations to achieve the same goal.

Clothing

The Kids Clothesline – Allentown – This store allows you to consign in person or online. It offers a bi-annual consigner’s event that takes place in the spring and fall at the Allentown Fairgrounds that features more than 700 consignors, according to the company website. Not only will you find clothing for kids of all ages, but you also can find other kids’ items such as toys, books, movies, furniture, etc.

Plato’s Closet – Allentown – This store buys gently-used teen and young-adult clothes, shoes, and accessories that are in good condition (e.g., no stains).

Style Encore – Allentown– Priding itself on selling the hottest name brands, this store buys and sells gently used women’s casual and business clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories.

Something Borrowed Bridal Boutique – Perkasie – Talk about specialized clothing: This boutique will take bridal gowns, formal gowns, mother of the bride/groom gowns, flower girl dresses, veils, bridal jewelry, and shoes on consignment, provided that they are less than 5 years old. (Vintage and bridesmaid gowns are not accepted.) You also can donate your bridal gown and other specific items, and this boutique will donate them to a charity of your choice.

Music

Used music is very much in demand these days, especially with the return to prominence of vinyl the past few years. There are some very good local options to choose from when you’re looking to sell your music-related goods:

Spin Me Round – Palmer Park Mall in Palmer – Spin Me Round buys and sells vinyl records, CD’s, DVDs, video games, books, and more.

Compact Disc Center – Bethlehem – This store buys, trades, and sells new and used CDs, DVDs, vinyl, and even cassettes. The store’s website asks you to call if you’re interested in selling a large collection.

Music Go Round – Wilkes-Barre – OK, so this store is outside the Lehigh Valley (consider it the Greater Lehigh Valley … yes, it’s a stretch), but since it’s hard to find stores in the Lehigh Valley that buy musical instruments and equipment, we thought it was worth a mention.

Books

2nd & Charles – Whitehall – Located in the MacArthur Towne Center, this store is actually a national chain. Not only does 2nd & Charles buys books (paperback, hardcover, comics, and more), but it also buys music (instruments as well as CDs and vinyl), movies, video games (plus gaming systems and accessories), regular games and toys, technology (iPods, iPads, and e-readers), and even collectibles and action figures.

The Old Library Bookshop – Bethlehem – This locally owned and operated niche bookstore buys items as needed; it currently is purchasing hardcovers and paperbacks (not mass-market varieties). Check the website frequently for items the store is looking to buy.

Antiques and Collectibles

Bucks County Estate Traders – Hatfield – Buys estate items and furniture with immediate payouts. Great for selling your stuff that may have a higher value but you do not want to auction.

Kamelot Antiques Auction – Philadelphia – This National Association Of Professional Organizers associate member has on staff appraisers available. Send photos of items you are getting rid of and they will spot the gems for you.

K.D. Smith Auction & Son – Quakertown – Calling itself “the most unique auction in Upper Bucks County,” this family-run business has relocated to Quakertown after many years in Allentown. The owners look to buy everything from coins to collectibles (sports, political, and more), from jewelry to weaponry, and so much more.

Cottage Antiques & Crafts – Allentown – Aside from the items in the company name, this auction house buys furniture, tools, jewelry, seasonal decorations, collectibles, and much more from the public.

Spartan Antiques & Estate Liquidators – Quakertown – This store specializes in mid-century and Danish designed furniture and jewelry.

Additional Services We Provide

If specialty stores and online listings aren’t your thing, we offer additional solutions:

  • Hosting a Yard Sale – We’ll organize and advertise your sale for maximum turnout.
  • Pawn Shop Runs – We can take items to local pawn shops and negotiate the best price.
  • Bulk Item Pickup – Have a large collection? We can coordinate buyers or haul items for donation or disposal.

Recycle or Donate

Sometimes, your best bet to get rid of something is to recycle or donate it instead of trying to make money selling your stuff. We can help coordinate donation drop-offs and arrange for bulk pick-ups.
