Project Goal: Preserve Priceless Family Memories for Future Generations

When our client first reached out, his request was deeply personal: to back up home movies that had once been transferred from VHS tapes to DVDs years ago. At the time, he had opted not to receive a USB backup—a decision he now regretted.

While the DVDs remained in good condition, stored neatly in a CD organizer, they were vulnerable. DVD players are rapidly disappearing from households, and the format is becoming outdated. He wanted a modern, future-proof way to preserve and share family memories, especially with his daughters and grandchildren.

This was more than a backup project. It was a chance to preserve a family legacy—and make it accessible for generations to come.

Step 1: Digitizing DVDs to Create High-Quality Video Files

We began the project by attempting to convert the DVDs using software. At first, it looked promising—but as we started editing, we discovered a key issue: the audio and video were out of sync.

To maintain quality and integrity, we made a critical decision: to digitize each DVD in real-time. This meant playing each video all the way through and recording it manually. It was time-consuming, but the result was high-quality digital files that reflected the original footage accurately—every voice, every laugh, every memory preserved with care.

Step 2: Clipping and Organizing Home Videos for Easy Access

Once the DVDs were digitized, we moved on to organizing the footage. Instead of long, unbroken files, our client wanted the ability to jump to specific moments without watching hours of content.

We clipped each video into individual scenes—some DVDs had 50+ clips, each representing a unique memory: a birthday celebration, a school performance, a backyard barbecue. We also carefully labeled each clip for easy searching and sorting.

This step turned a traditional archive into a personalized digital video library, making it simple for the family to watch exactly what they wanted, whenever they wanted.

Step 3: Uploading to “Projector” for Seamless Family Viewing

With over 500 clips created, we uploaded the entire collection to Projector, a streaming platform built for home videos. Think of it like a private Netflix—except filled with your own family memories.

We set up Projector on the client’s smart TVs at home, at the shore house, and shared access with other family members. Now, instead of pulling out a dusty DVD, they can stream family videos directly on the TV during holidays or special gatherings.

Step 4: USB Distribution for Safe, Redundant Backups

To ensure the home movies were truly protected, we created USB backups for each of the client’s daughters. Now, multiple copies exist in separate locations, safeguarding the collection from data loss or hardware failure.

Additionally, the family can now upload their own modern memories—photos and videos from smartphones—into the Projector app. This project didn’t just preserve the past; it created a system for continuing the family’s story into the future.
